Potassium permanganate (PP) is a compound that is used by aquarists for the disinfecting of plants or ornaments before placement into aquariums.
It is used to remove organic build-up in tank water, and kill bacteria and fungi. It is also employed to treat some parasites that infect fish.
Potassium permanganate is widely used in the chemical industry and laboratories as a strong oxidizing agent, and also as a medication for dermatitis, for cleaning wounds, and general disinfection.
Reagent name: Potassium permanganate
Synonyms: potassium permanganate, potassium manganate (VII)
Summary formula: KMnO4
Molar mass [g / mol]: 158.04
CAS Number: 7722-64-7
Minimum content [%]: 99
Type: salts
APPLICATION:
Chemical reagent for laboratory, analytical and teaching purposes.
"It is used as an oxidant in many chemical reactions, especially in organic chemistry. It is a strong oxidant, e.g. primary alcohols are oxidized directly to salts of carboxylic acids, while secondary alcohols KMnO4 is oxidized to ketones, and the reaction usually continues, breaking the C bond. –C.
Potassium permanganate solution is used in chemical analysis to detect reducing ions such as thiocyanates (rhodides), bromides, nitrites.
This solution is also used in quantitative analysis, for titration - it is manganometry.
Potassium permanganate has strong bacteriocidal properties.
A 0.05% solution is used to rinse skin, wounds and ulcers, and a 0.025% solution is used to rinse the mouth. obtaining chlorine by reaction with hydrochloric acid.
